Archbishop Dufour
Archbishop Dufour was ordained to Priesthood on August 12, 1970. His Episcopal Ordination took place on February 10. He has been Associate Pastor at Holy Rosary Church, Windward Road and St. Joseph’s Church, Spanish Town. He was pastor at St. Benedict’s Church, Harbour View; African Martyrs of Uganda, Bull Bay; Christ the King, Port Royal, and Christ the King Church, August Town as well as Rector at St. Michael’s Seminary
Under his watch he stamped his mark as a church builder, evangelizer and a community worker who had a passion for the youth, the poor and marginalized. In 1991 the Holy Father Pope John Paul II named Fr. Dufour to be Monsignor. He was ordained and installed as the second Roman Catholic Bishop of Montego Bay on February 10, 1996.
He is founder and patron of the Good Shepherd Foundation, a nondenominational, non-governmental and non-profit charity, which serves the community through clinics, children’s homes for the abandoned and mentally challenged, children’s education assistance, school feeding programmes and a Hospice for the dying, especially those afflicted with HIV/AIDS.
Bishop Dufour was Chairman of the Peace Management Initiative in St. James from March 2003 to February 2008; member of the Parliamentary salaries Commission; member of the Jamaica Council of Churches Commission on “Evangelism, Church and Society” and Chairman of the organising committee for the Papal visit to Jamaica in 1993.
He has served as a member of the Board of Visitors for Correctional Institutions in Kingston and South Camp Rehabilitation centre; Vice President National Committee for Justice and Peace and Unity; Chairman of the board of Donald Quarrie Secondary school and Rector of the St. Michael’s Major Seminary.
He has received many major awards and accolades for his work. These include the Prime Minister’s Medal of Appreciation in 1983 to mark Jamaica’s 21st anniversary of Independence; and the Order of Distinction, Commander Class in 2006. In August 2006 he was appointed as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Mandeville by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI until a bishop was named for that diocese in 2008. He was also appointed Chairman of the Police (Civilian Oversight) Authority by His Excellency the Most Hon. Professor Kenneth O. Hall, Governor General of Jamaica in August 2008 and his term of office came to an end on August 21, 2011.
On April 19, 2011 His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI appointed Bishop Dufour as the 6th Archbishop of Kingston and he was installed on June 16, 2011.
He retired as Archbishop of Kingston in 2016 and was appointed by His Holiness Pope Francis to serve once again as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Mandeville on July 7, 2016.
